Why compare MongoDB providers?
Because they differ widely in server access, data egress fees, backup costs and flexibility to change specs, so long-term total cost can vary several times over even when starting prices look similar.
What does Bring Your Own Cloud mean?
The database is installed in your own cloud account, such as AWS or Azure, and the provider manages it for you. You own the resources, can use your existing cloud discounts and keep full control of your data.
Why does database admin access matter?
Admin rights let you tune parameters in depth, install your own monitoring tools and fix performance problems yourself. Services that withhold them usually leave you dependent on the provider's support channel.
Do data egress fees add much to the cost?
A lot for systems with heavy reads or cross-region replication. Some providers bill every kind of transfer separately, which can become a large share of the monthly bill, so it should be assessed up front.
Is it hard to move from our current provider?
Not with good planning. We use live migration, syncing the new database from the old one until they match, then switching the application's connection at a quiet time — with only a few minutes of downtime.
